Who Invented the Car

The car as we know it today is an evolution of all the previous designs and inventions that date back to the 18th century. Although maybe you could say that it dates back to the 15th century when Leonardo da Vinci was creating designs for vehicles. So the invention of the automobile started in the 15th century.

During its development automobiles were first powered by steam. During the 1670s, Ferdinand Verbiest designed what is claimed by some people to be the first ever self-propelled vehicle, it is often said that this is the world's first automobile. It is unknown if this design was ever manufactured. The first steam vehicle that was actually built and used on a road was designed by Nicolas Joseph Cugnot who was born in 1725. It was designed for use by the French military and was used to pull artillery. The top speed of this steam powered vehicle was 2.5mph. The date of this event was 1769.

The first road carriage powered by steam in Great Britain was designed by Richard Trevithick; this vehicle was operated in 1801. The first electric carriage was invented by Robert Anderson, who was a Scottish businessman. This electric carriage was invented between 1832 and 1839, precise dates are unknown. This automobile had an electric motor that was powered from rechargeable batteries. The technology of the time made the components of the automobile heavy and the vehicle was slow.

In 1844 Karl Friedrich Benz was born in Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany. Karl Friedrich Benz was a German mechanical engineer and in 1885 he built the world's first practical automobile that was powered by an internal combustion engine.
